Art has the power to move, inspire, and change us. As the oldest and most universal form of communication we use art to connect and voice our messages to a greater audience. I have already spoken about the history of beauty represented through art and it shows how beauty standards are moulded by societal conventions. Beauty and the human form have always been a loved subject of artworks, music and film because it reaches out to our most common thoughts and feelings. Once we are exposed to something enough in our day to day lives these things become normal and we don’t second guess it, this is how conventions around beauty stereotypes are formed. So why not include something positive and fulfilling like a message which has the power to transform lives and bring joy.
In my recent collection I have chosen to really emit this message of Body Positivity Artwork through drawing the human figure in its rawest yet most natural way. I am focusing on skin which I absolutely love to draw because of its hidden details, the shapes and colours and lines we don't see. I have chosen to keep it simple so far and focus on details which are most common to every human but most people would consider it a flaw and be ashamed. Details as simple as stretch-marks, cellulite, mummy-tummy’s or a few jiggly spots or rolls, these details can be made beautiful when presented with confidence.
There is no point in hiding it when it isn’t even ugly and everybody has them.
I have so far been very lucky to have the opportunity to convey my message through art in a very public space at Waterloo Station in London. My artwork Gerbera Daisy was displayed on eight digital billboards for thousands of people to walk past on their everyday routines. To me this is exposing minds to the possibility that natural stretch-marks left from the miracle of birth is just as beautiful and as a model advertising the latest fashion brands. Even more because she relates to almost every woman who has the same scars, and others who might have other tells from their life naturally left on their bodies. Our skin is beautiful, it shows who we are and where we have been. It is the canvas of our life and it continuously changes with us, adding new details naturally with each experience.
Of course it is intimidating to turn our thoughts around when we have been self critical for so long but it is worth it. More exposure and seeing more communities addressing and expressing this movement is liberating. And if there is something I can do to help people and their mental well being I am going to do my part to contribute.
To help define this movement I have written a little bit describing this powerful force to help reiterate these benefits for our health, well being and help us live our best. It is actually less of about the physical and more about our mentality which proves why criticising our physical selves leads to so many mental health problems which can be devastating. Knowledge is the key to motivation, investing in your health and well being is the best gift you can give yourself and in effect the ones you love.
Defining the Body Positivity Philosophy through Artwork: A Movement for Self-Love and Acceptance
Body positivity is not about being perfect or striving for an unrealistic ideal. It is about recognising that your body is worthy of respect, care, and appreciation exactly as it is. It is about learning to silence the critical inner voice and replacing it with compassion, kindness, and acceptance. This takes practice and perserverance but it a worth while long term goal.
When we practice body positivity, we free ourselves from the constant pressure to conform to narrow beauty norms. We learn to honour the unique features that make us who we are and to see the beauty in our diverse forms. This journey of self-love empowers us to live more authentic, joyful lives, unencumbered by shame or self-criticism.
The Negative Impacts of Body Negativity and Societal Beauty Standards
Our bodies are incredible, complex, and unique - yet society often promotes a narrow and unrealistic standard of beauty that can have devastating impacts. Body negativity and the pressure to conform to societal ideals can lead to debilitating issues like low self-esteem, disordered eating, and poor mental health.
It is time to challenge these harmful norms and embrace the diversity of human bodies. Each of us is worthy of love, respect, and acceptance exactly as we are. By cultivating body confidence and rejecting toxic beauty standards, we can free ourselves and future generations from the shackles of body shame.
The Science Behind Body Positivity: How it Improves Mental and Physical Health
Body positivity has been shown to improve both mental and physical health in profound ways. By rejecting societal pressures and embracing self-acceptance, we unlock the path to greater emotional wellbeing, higher self-esteem, and even enhanced physical vitality.
The science is clear - a body positive mindset fosters healthier behaviours, reduces stress and anxiety, and inspires us to prioritise self-care. Far from being superficial, this shift in perspective can have a catalytic effect on our overall health and happiness.
